PAC AND LEGISLATIVE
BE A PAC’ER!
Political Action Committee -- PAC
Linda Carter, NC PAC Chairperson
Dominick asked me to serve as Chapter PAC Chairperson this year. What
a great opportunity to demonstrate that NC Postmasters will do our
share to safeguard universal postal services and protect retirement
benefits by financially supporting political lawmakers who are supportive
of the United States Postal Service and our employees! I know you are
eager to do your share!
What are we doing? A delegation of 1400 postmasters from throughout
the country, including approximately twenty-five from North Carolina,
assembled in Washington last week to review the issues currently in
the hands of lawmakers that impact the USPS. On Tuesday and Wednesday,
the delegation took the messages to the Hill to meet with respective
members of Congress and the Senate. By scheduling appointments prior
to the visit, each Postmaster had an opportunity to sit down and talk
one-on-one with those who either vote, or influence the vote, on urgent
issues that impact Postmasters and the USPS. How inspiring to walk
the Halls of Congress with fellow Postmasters and know that every office
on the Hall assigned to every state in the Union is being visited with
the same message.
What does PAC funds do? One hundred percent of PAC donations go to
support the election or re-election of lawmakers who understand and
support legislation benefiting active and retired postmasters. By pooling
contributions, PAC is more effective than postmasters individually
making contributions to particular candidates. The combined contributions
provided to candidates in the name of NAPUS PAC are a positive identification
between the candidate and the postmasters.
Where do PAC funds come from? PAC funds are 100% donated specifically
for political campaign contributions and are kept separate from all
other Chapter funds. Membership dues may not be used for PAC. PAC is
totally dependant on postmasters such as YOU.
Well, what can YOU do? Become a PAC’er today! Every postmaster
should donate to PAC at whatever level you can afford. No postmaster
should be left behind. Every postmaster has an opportunity to safeguard
the future of your career. The form below is your opportunity to do
your part. Please complete and mail today. Social Security numbers
are no longer needed. If you don’t know your NAPUS ID number,
just leave it blank and I will look it up for you. And thanks for doing
your share to protect our future!
Welcome to the PAC’er Club!

Hello everyone!
We just got back from the 2008 Legislative Conference in Washington,
D.C it was a lot of work, but it was worth every minute of it. We had
a wonderful time!
Again, about 1400 Postmasters and Retirees took the “Hill”,
Capitol Hill, by storm. About 25 of us from North Carolina was there
and we went to every congressional representative and senator’s
office, educating and explaining to them the issues that Postmasters
face and asking their support on issues that concern us. We asked that
they would cosponsor the bills that support our issues. Whether it
is for the Vote By Mail, Defending the Postmaster Retirement Equity,
The new bill HR 5573 that has been introduced by Representative Jim
Moran, which is the Leave Equity Bill, and keeping the smaller post
offices opened.
We explained to them about the negative impact the GPO and the WEP
have on our retired Civil Service Postmasters. We asked that they would
support legislation that would alleviate the unfairness placed on retired
Civil Service Postmasters by the GPO and the WEP. Some of the retirees
were with us and was able to explain first hand how the GPO and the
WEP has negatively affected their livelihood.
The new H.R. 5573 Leave Equity Bill introduced is asking that $10,000
be reimbursed to FERS employees upon retirement who would other wise
lose all of the sick leave hours earned during their postal career.
So lets keep our attention on this new bill also.
In addition, other issues concern us and that we would like Congress
will keep an oversight on. Such as the USPS and the PRC in pertaining
to the new PL 109-435. Asking Congress to pass legislation that will
permit the Postal Service to apply for the Medicare D subsidy and the “Do
Not Mail List”. The Do Not Mail List is being tried in 18 States
and if this continues to spread, will have an extremely negative impact
on the USPS.
This year the Legislative Chairs went to the Postal Regulatory Commissions
office and given a presentation on how they are now set up and what
they do and the time frame they work under. I will say again; this
trip was well worth its time.
I would like to thank all of you who helped make this trip successful.
